Nanzuke formed in Vitória, Brazil, with Alisson Lima on vocals, Paulo Munhoz on guitar, Alex Passos on bass, and Rodrigo Carvalho on drums. Their sound pulled from Brazilian rhythms alongside rock and pop. In 2011, their single 'Ela Gosta' caught on quickly, becoming a national hit that pushed the band into wider recognition.
After that initial success, the group faced some criticism about their direction and lyrics. In 2015, Lima stepped away to deal with depression, which left the band's status unclear for a while. The other members kept working during that period. Lima returned in 2017, and Nanzuke resumed activity.
