Nappy Roots

Nappy Roots formed in 1995 in Louisville, Kentucky, a group of friends who started making music together. Their debut album 'Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz' came out in 2002, and the single 'Good Day' got heavy radio play that year. That track, along with 'Awnaw' and 'Country Boyz,' gave them a national audience with a sound that felt distinctly Southern without fitting neatly into any one genre.

They followed up with 'Wooden Leather' in 2003 and 'The Humdinger' in 2005, albums that touched on social issues and personal stories. Later records like '40 Acres' in 2014 and 'Torches & Pitchforks' in 2019 showed the group continuing to work, though their lineup has stayed mostly the same since the beginning with members like Milledge 'Fish' Scales and William 'Skinny DeVille' Hughes.

There was a legal dispute with Atlantic Records around 2004 that got settled, and they've worked with artists like Talib Kweli and George Clinton over time. But mostly they've kept making music from Kentucky, with songs like 'Ballin' On A Budget' and 'Sell It Out' reflecting their grounded perspective.
