From Mahavishnu Orchestra fusion to his own pop-funk singles, he kept the beat for a generation.
For his fusion chops, listen to the Mahavishnu years. For his pop side, 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' and 'I Shoulda Loved Ya' tell that story.
He was the drummer in John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra in the mid-1970s, helping shape that band's fusion sound. After going solo, he landed a hit with 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' in 1983, and tracks like 'Divine Emotions' showed he could step out front as a vocalist too. His work as a producer for other artists in that era quietly extended his reach beyond the drum kit.
He started playing drums early, drawing from funk and soul. After leaving Mahavishnu Orchestra, he released his debut album 'Garden of Love Light' in 1976 and later had a hit with 'Gimme Gimme Gimme'.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
