Editor's note

Natalie Cole, from R&B hits to a father's duet

Nat King Cole's daughter built her own career, then reunited with him through studio magic.

For her own sound, try 'I've Got Love On My Mind'. For the duet that defined her later work, 'Unforgettable' is the one.

She had her own R&B success with songs like 'I've Got Love On My Mind' in the 1970s. But the 1991 album 'Unforgettable. with Love' created something genuinely new, using technology to sing duets with her father's archived vocals. That project became her signature, bridging her career with his legacy in a way that felt both technical and deeply personal.

She started singing with her father as a child, then released her debut album 'Inseparable' in 1975. After a resurgence with 1987's 'Everlasting', she recorded the tribute album that paired her voice with his. She kept working through health challenges until her death in 2015.

Natalie Cole was Nat King Cole's daughter, but she built her own career in R&B and pop. She started singing with her father when she was 11, and after his death in 1965, she released her debut album 'Inseparable' in 1975. Her early work included songs like 'I've Got Love On My Mind' and 'I'm Catchin' Hell'.

In 1987, her album 'Everlasting' brought her back to prominence with hits like a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Pink Cadillac'. Four years later, she recorded 'Unforgettable... with Love', a tribute to her father that used studio technology to create duets with his archived vocals.

Cole kept recording through the 1990s and 2000s, putting out albums like 'Take a Look' and 'Stardust'. She also dealt with health issues, including hepatitis C and a kidney transplant in 2009. She died in 2015 at 65.
