Natural High came out of Philadelphia in the late 1970s with a sound that mixed soul, R&B, and funk. Their debut single 'Natural High!' got some attention, landing in the Billboard Hot 100's top 10 in 1979. The band was built around Ricky Bell, Ralph Johnson, and Jimmy Reynolds, who had been playing together since they were kids.
After that initial success, things got complicated. Reynolds left in the early 1980s to go solo, and the group had some legal trouble with their label that made it hard to put out new music or tour. Bell and Johnson kept the name going with different lineups, but the momentum from that first single was hard to recapture.
You can still hear what caught people's ear on tracks like 'Bartender' and 'I Think Of You', that straightforward, upbeat R&B feel with clean harmonies. The band's story is mostly about that one bright moment and then figuring out what came next.
