Background notes

Archive material and source history

Necrosis formed in Birmingham in 1987 with Paul Gilbert on vocals, Greg Shaw and Paul Adams on guitars, Tony Shambles on bass, and Simon Bradley on drums. Their sound was raw and aggressive from the start, built around distorted guitars and guttural vocals. They faced some pushback from authorities who saw their music as a threat, but kept working.

In 1991, they released "(The Busy) Stateman," a song that criticized political corruption and was interpreted as targeting Prime Minister John Major. The band denied any extremist ties, but the song became their most notorious track.

They put out albums like "War and Peace" in 1993 and "Empire" in 1996, with songs like "Enslaved To The Machine" and "Kingdom of Hate" continuing their confrontational style. The lineup shifted over time, Gilbert left in 1997, replaced by Ian Watkins on vocals, and Shaw departed in 2004, with Neil Franklin taking over guitar. Adams, Shambles, and Bradley remained through most of it.
