Nu draaide hij de bak in
Op beschuldiging van moord

Hij was koud opgehangen
Toen hij gratie kreeg
De beul die hem bevrijden moest

Want de strop die hij gestrikt had
Kreeg je nooit meer uit de knoop
Zo bleef Jan uren hangen
De zon scheen op zijn bol
Zijn nek werd alsmaar langer
Maar hij hield dapper vol
Toen de zon begon te zakken
Kwam Piet Snot voorbij
Jan riep: "Je krijgt een zakdoek
Als je mij bevrijdt"
"Ik neem niks aan van vreemden"
Zei Piet Snot en hij liep door
De zon was al verdwenen
En de lijkwagen reed voor
Jan trilde van de zenuwen
En baadde in het zweet
Hij deed net of hij dood was
Toen de kraai het touw doorsneed
Jan plofte op de aarde neer
En juichte: "Ik ben vrij"
De kraai die zich een aap schrok
Viel naast hem neer en zei
"Jij mag dan wel vrij zijn
Maar nu hang ik jou op
Ze blijven gratie geven
Jij bent mijn vierde strop
Ik kan het niet helpen
Dat de wet zich heeft vergist
Ik heb toch ook mijn kosten
Wat dacht je van zo'n kist"
Jan vocht voor zijn leven
De kraai legde het af
En sinds die dag rijdt Jan als kraai
De doden naar hun graf
Jan Lul stond voor de rechter
En de rechter voor Jan Lul
