Background notes

Archive material and source history

Negritude Roots formed in Haiti during the early 1990s, a period when the country was under the regime of Raoul Cédras. The band's name referenced the Negritude intellectual movement, and their music drew from Haitian folk, reggae, and rock. Core members included Mickenson Prudent on vocals, Patrick Dorcé on guitar, and Max Pierre on drums.

Their debut album 'Rasanble' came out in 1997 and included the song 'Meninos,' a ballad about children living in Haitian slums. They released other albums like 'Fèy' in 2001, 'Soley' in 2005, and 'Kilti' in 2010. The band collaborated with artists including Manu Dibango and Tiken Jah Fakoly.

They kept performing and recording, with their music addressing social justice themes in Haiti.
