Archive material and source history
Nelly Ciobanu grew up in Ceadir-Lunga, Moldova, and started singing in local choirs and festivals. In the early 1990s, she joined Nicolae Botgros's Orchestra "Lăutarii" as a soloist.
Her version of "Hora Din Moldova (Dance of Moldova)" came out in 1999. The song mixed traditional folk melodies with modern arrangements and became popular both in Moldova and internationally.
In the early 2000s, some traditionalists criticized her for modernizing folk music too much. She kept working with the idea that innovation could work alongside traditional forms.
