Ney Cigano was born Ney Rosa dos Santos and Zé do Circo was born José Carlos Rodrigues. They started performing in the 1960s, often in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Their music drew from samba and bossa nova, with a straightforward, melodic style built around their voices and guitars.
Their first album came out in 1971, simply titled 'Ney Cigano e Zé do Circo'. It included 'Mulher Nota Dez'. They followed it with several more records through the mid-1970s, including 'Cigano e Zé do Circo' in 1972 and 'Dois Ciganos' in 1973.
