Ney De Alcântara

Ney de Alcântara was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1948. He formed his band in 1970, with members including guitarists Jorge Mautner and Claudio Roditi, bassist Luizão Maia, and drummer Pedro Santos. His music drew from bossa nova, samba, and jazz, blending those rhythms with lyrics that often felt introspective and poetic.

In 1976, his album 'Só Não Pode Ser Triste' brought a breakthrough with the song 'Brinquedos de Criança,' a ballad about childhood innocence and loss that became widely known in Brazil. Other songs like 'Vai caminhoneiro' and 'Indiferença' also stand out in his catalog. His lyrics sometimes touched on topics like sexuality and political oppression, which drew criticism from conservative circles at the time.

He kept recording through the late 1970s and into the 1980s, with albums such as 'Ney de Alcântara' in 1978 and 'Samba de Orly' in 1981. The music stayed rooted in Brazilian styles but carried a personal, sometimes questioning tone that set it apart from more straightforward pop of the era.
