Niia formed in New York City around 2018 as a trio with songwriter and vocalist Astra Kelly, guitarist Zachary Allen, and drummer Adam Snowhill. Their sound pulled from indie rock, pop, and R&B, and they put out a debut single called "Face" that got some attention.
They opened for acts like The National and Lizzo, and released albums including "Face," "All The Time," and "Sun." Songs like "Body" and "Constantly Dissatisfied" show their tendency toward raw, introspective writing. Kelly's lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being too confrontational, but the band kept working with a style that didn't stick to one genre.
Their music deals with love, loss, and self-discovery, and they built a following that responded to the directness in songs like "California" and "Day & Night." They were active in the late 2010s and early 2020s, putting out records that felt both experimental and emotionally grounded.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
