Nitra formed in Porto Alegre in the early 1990s as a trio with vocalist Adriana Calcanhotto, guitarist José Miguel Wisnik, and percussionist Marcelo Costa. Their name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning 'without birth or end.' Their debut album 'Músicas Para Ouvir Em Casa' came out in 1994 and included the track 'Alegria e Só,' which became a hit.
That first record mixed samba, bossa nova, jazz, and Brazilian folk. They followed it with albums like 'Afrodite,' 'Ciranda do Mundo,' 'O Perfume do Tempo,' and 'Voz e Violão.' Other songs in their catalog include 'Me Mostre os Seus Sentidos,' 'Nome Composto,' and 'Vai Passar.'
