The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band started playing folk music in Los Angeles clubs and coffeehouses around the mid-1960s. Jeff Hanna, Bruce Kunkel, Les Thompson, and Jackson Browne were among the original members. They put out their first album in 1970, and a song called 'Mr. Bojangles' from their next record got them some wider attention.
Their sound mixed folk with country and bluegrass, and they tried different things as they went along. The band's lineup shifted over time, with Jackson Browne leaving in 1970. They recorded songs like 'Battle of New Orleans' and 'Brand New Heartache' that fit with their rootsy approach.
At one point they dealt with a plagiarism claim about a song called 'Long Hard Road,' which they settled out of court. The group kept playing and recording through changes, working with musicians like Jimmy Ibbotson later on.
