Nobandnobrand formed in Tokyo in 2008 around vocalist and songwriter Hajime Kouta, with bassist Takuya Uchida, drummer Hiroki Oda, and keyboardist Airi Tsuyuzaki. They worked with a mix of alternative rock and electronic elements that felt deliberately off-center, avoiding the more polished edges of mainstream Japanese indie.

Their 2011 single 'Apartment 4 Rent' became an unexpected hit, a sparse track about urban isolation that connected with listeners despite its unconventional structure. That song, along with others like 'God Ex Machina' and 'Perfume Bokeh,' gave their music a haunted, slightly detached quality that became their recognizable sound.

They released albums roughly every few years, including 'Summertime' in 2013 and 'Urban Night' in 2016, each continuing to blend rock and electronic textures with lyrics that circled themes of memory and dislocation. Their live shows were known for being energetic but never slick, keeping the same slightly frayed quality as their recordings.
