Noemia Carvalho started singing in church as a child in Itapiranga, Santa Catarina. By her teenage years she had developed a distinctive mezzo-soprano voice. In the 1970s, record producer Ronaldo Santos invited her to join the gospel group Conjunto Vocal Vida, where she recorded several albums and toured Brazil.
Her 1979 solo debut 'Jesus Vivo' included the song 'Deus Operou Milagres,' which became a hit on Brazilian gospel charts. Another track, 'Grau de Intimidade,' also gained attention. Her music incorporated some pop and rock elements into gospel, which drew criticism from some quarters early on.
She toured internationally to audiences in Europe, the United States, and Africa. Her voice and message connected with listeners across different backgrounds.
