Noemia Nascimento came from São João da Barra and started recording in the mid-1970s. Her debut album 'Chegou a Hora' included 'Tapete de Fogo,' a song that became widely known in Brazil.
Her music drew from Brazilian folk traditions and African rhythms, with songs like 'Pai, Filho e Espírito Santo' and 'Exército de Anjos' appearing in her catalog. She worked with a regular group of musicians on albums such as 'Voz e Percussão' and 'Xirê das Matas.'
Some of her lyrics and performances drew criticism from conservative quarters during that period. She kept recording through the early 1980s, with 'Noemia: Ao Vivo' capturing her stage presence.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
