Archive material and source history
The Non-Prophets formed in New York City in 1992 with Ethan James on vocals and guitar, Lisa Deming on bass and vocals, and Mike McAleer on drums. Their debut album 'The Thin Wall' came out the following year, and a track from it called 'Any Port' got some attention. The band put out a few more records over the next decade, like 'Great Divide' in 1995 and 'Stranger in Town' in 1998.
James and Deming had a falling out that led to the band splitting up in 1996. Some of their lyrics drew criticism at the time for being too frank. Their songs, including 'Damage' and 'Mainstream 307,' often dealt with personal themes over a mix of acoustic and electric arrangements.
