Nona Hendryx was born in 1944 and grew up in Trenton, New Jersey, where she sang in her church choir. In the late 1960s, she moved to New York and helped form the vocal group Labelle.
With Labelle, Hendryx gained attention for her strong voice and stage presence. The group had a hit in 1975 with "Lady Marmalade." After Labelle broke up in 1977, she started recording on her own. Her 1982 album "Nona" included the song "Bustin' Out."
She has spoken about facing racism and sexism in the music business, and has dealt with addiction and mental health struggles. Hendryx has also been vocal about social justice and LGBTQ+ rights.
