Normando Caveira formed in Portugal in the late 1970s, with João Noronha on vocals, Paulo Azevedo on guitar, Pedro Lopes on bass, and André Carreira on drums. Their music came out of a period of political and social change, and it had a raw, confrontational edge that didn't sit well with everyone. Their first album was called 'Capital da Moda' in 1980, followed by 'Do Inferno Ninguém Regressa' in 1982.
The song 'Capital da Moda' became a kind of anthem. Its lyrics, which included a blunt line about capitalism, were considered offensive by authorities at the time. The album faced a radio ban, and the band dealt with some legal trouble because of it. That kind of reaction just made the song and the band more significant to the people who were listening.
They were a punk band, but their sound pulled from rock and new wave as well. It wasn't polished. Tracks like 'Primeiro Assalto' and 'Reginaldo' carried that same direct, urgent feel. The band's active period was relatively short; they reunited briefly much later, in the 2000s, but those early records are what stuck around.
