Norteño Estilo Renovado formed in Culiacán, Sinaloa in 2003, started by brothers José Ángel and Lorenzo Ayala. They began playing local festivals and clubs, working with traditional Mexican music forms. Their debut album came out in 2006, sharing its name with the track 'De Alcohol Voy a Morir' that became their breakout song.
That title track, along with songs like 'La Traicionera,' connected with listeners through straightforward storytelling about heartbreak and difficult situations. The music kept norteño rhythms at its center while letting the lyrics carry the emotional weight. They kept recording through the 2010s, putting out albums like 'Entre Balas y Balazos' in 2011 and 'La Muerte Andaba en Tequila' in 2013.
Their material sometimes drew criticism for its subject matter, with some suggesting it touched on underworld themes. The group continued performing and releasing music despite these conversations. Their bassist Israel Morales died in a car accident during this period, which affected the band's lineup and direction.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
