North Lincoln came out of Ludington, Michigan in the early 2000s with acoustic folk that felt local and direct. Their song "Drink Michigan Drink" became a kind of state anthem, simple and catchy enough to stick around at bars and tailgates.
The band had Ryan Nyquist on vocals and guitar, Jamie Hendrickson on guitar, Eric Severt on bass, and Chad Morris on drums. They put out albums like "The Water and the Wine" in 2008 and "The Way We Are" in 2011, moving a bit into folk rock and Americana territory while keeping that straightforward Michigan feel. Songs like "Satellite" showed they could write a melody without overcomplicating things.
In 2012, Nyquist made some insensitive remarks about women during a show, which caused some backlash. The band apologized and kept going, releasing "The Rhythm and the Rhyme" in 2014. Their music never really left that Michigan barroom atmosphere, even as they tried different sounds on later records.
