Northern came out of Manchester in the mid-1990s with Nick Campbell on vocals and guitar, Mark Radcliffe on bass, and Paul Mooney on drums. They signed with Motown Records and put out their debut single "Bang Bang" in 1997. That song got big enough to land them on charts in a few countries.
They kept making albums after that, moving through different phases. Their self-titled debut in 1997 had a raw feel, while 2002's "From Here to Eternity" tried some more experimental sounds. Later records like "The World Is Yours" in 2005 and "Old School" in 2009 brought them back toward a classic rock approach. Other songs in their catalog include "Heart Condition" and "We Illuminate."
At one point, around 2001, they got some pushback for lyrics that were seen as promoting violence, which led to a temporary radio ban for a song called "Guns." That kind of scrutiny came with the territory as they got more attention.
