Background notes

Archive material and source history

Not Astray came out of Philadelphia in the mid-1980s, originally called Dead Wrong. The lineup was Rich Byrne on guitar, Jeff Caudill on vocals, Jim Byrne on bass, and Chris Caudill on drums. They put out albums like 'The Death of Me' in 1987 and 'Meet Your Maker' in 1989, playing fast hardcore with melodic breakdowns.

Their song 'Straight Edge Fashion' from 1986 became a kind of anthem. It drew some attention from the Straight Edge Society of New York, who filed a lawsuit over the use of the term. The band kept going for a few more years, recording a live album in New York City in 1990, but they broke up in the early 1990s.
