Novalia

Novalia formed in 2001 in the village of Novoli, Lecce, with three musicians: Antonio Castrignanò on vocals, guitar, and mandolin; Daniela Chirico on vocals, accordion, and piano; and Giancarlo Paglialunga on drums, percussion, and vocals. They took their name from their shared heritage in that region of Southern Italy.

Their debut album "Canti e Briganti" came out in 2002, with the title track becoming something of an anthem for them. Later albums like "L'Isola" (2005) and "Il Viaggio" (2009) continued their work, which often mixed traditional Italian folk with Arabic influences and contemporary arrangements. Songs like "Ebla" and "Karalarasi (Mediterraneo)" reflect that blend.

Some listeners criticized Novalia for how they approached traditional material, while others appreciated their efforts to reinterpret it. They kept performing and recording, drawing on the folk songs of their area without sticking strictly to older forms.
