Editor's note

Nuclear Assault's raw thrash and nuclear warnings

A New York thrash band that never softened its sound or its message about war and oppression.

For the full, unfiltered picture, start with 'Brain Death' and then check out 'Game Over'. That's where their sound and their message really locked in.

They came out of New York City in 1984 with a specific, urgent sound. Their debut 'Brain Death' was all raw thrash energy, and songs like 'Nuclear War' made their political stance clear from the start. They weren't just playing fast; they were yelling about real fears.

The band formed with John Connelly and Dan Lilker, putting out 'Brain Death' in 1986 and 'Game Over' the next year. Connelly left in 1992, and after a break in the '90s, they reunited in 2002 and kept recording into the 2010s.

Nuclear Assault formed in New York City in 1984, with John Connelly on vocals and guitar, Dan Lilker on bass, Anthony Bramante on guitar, and Glenn Evans on drums. Their debut album 'Brain Death' came out in 1986, full of raw thrash energy and lyrics about nuclear war and government oppression.

Their 1987 album 'Game Over' included the track 'Critical Mass,' which became something of an anthem. They kept touring and putting out records like 'Survive' in 1988 and 'Handle With Care' in 1989, playing shows with bands like Megadeth and Slayer.

John Connelly left the band in 1992, and Scott Metaxas stepped in on vocals and guitar. After a break in the mid-1990s, they got back together in 2002 and released albums like 'Third World Genocide' in 2005 and 'Pounder' in 2012.
