ye marhalaa bhii Khair se aasaan ho gayaa

mere sukuun-e-dil ko to hona hii tha tabaah

unkii bhi ek nigaah kaa nuqsaan ho gayaa

The fabric of life has been disturbed

[so] this stage has also been traversed safely.

The tranquility of my heart was bound to be ruined

but my beloved also lost one glance.

muhabbat kii ko’ii manzil nahiiN hai

muhabbat mauj hai saahil nahiiN hai

meri afsurdagii pe haNsne vaale

tere pahluu meN shaayad dil nahiiN hai

Love has no destination,

love is a wave [of the ocean] not shore

O who laugh at my sadness!

may be you don’t have a heart within.

kahte ho mujh se ishq kaa afsaana chaahiye

rusva’ii ho ga’ii, tumheN sharmaana chahiye

She asks me for a story of love

I suffer infamy and she is unabashed.

Khuddar itnii fitrat-e-rindaana chaahiye

saaqii ye Khud kahe tujhe paimaana chaahiye

So selfless should be the nature of wine-drinker

that the cup-bearer herself offers the cup.

mattii Kharaab karte ho kyuuN biimaar-e-hijr kii

jo tum pe mar gayaa use dafnaanaa chaahiye

Why do you ruin a victim of separation?

If anyone dies for you, then should he be buried?

aankhoN mein dam ruka hai kisi ke liye zaruur

At my last breath, I would have died, except for someone.

go haath ko jumbish nahiiN aankhoN meN to dam hai

rahne do abhii saaGhar-o-miinaa mere aage

Though I can’t move my hands, I [still] have power in my eyes

let the cup and the wine remain in front of me.

aankhoN meN dam rukaa hai, aankhoN mein

kahnaa sitam ko chhoRo lillah na ab sataao

aankheN taras gayii haiN aa jaao aa bhii jaao

jab naahiiN mere Shaam pyaaro

It is the middle of the spring season

For whom shall I wear my yellow dress

when my dusky lover [Lord Krishna] is not with me?

diyaa sao deevari, nagar sab jag mag

maine madar meN diyaa hii na baaro

mein kehti phiruuN ke

Lamps on every wall, the entire city glittering

and I did not lighted a candle in my home

I keep on saying…

aate aate lab pe aaheN thak gayiiN

aa bhii jaao ab nigaaheN thak gayiiN

Now even the sighs are tired to come to my lips

please come, as my eyes are now tired waiting for you.

kyaa ban ke qayaamat kaa sabab aaoge?

Will you come as the reason of the day of judgment?

chhaayii hai ghaTaa aur barastii hai sharaab

tum ab bhii na aaye to kab aaoge

The clouds have gathered and wine rains

if you do not come even now, when would you come?

aankhoN meN dam rukaa hai kisii ke liye zaruur

varnaa mareez-e-hijr ko mar jaana chahiye

At my last breath, I would have died, except for someone

otherwise the victim of separation should have died [by now].

vaadaa andherii raat meN aane kaa thaa “Qamar”

ab chaaNd chhup gayaa unheN aa jaana chaahiye

O “Qamar”! The promise was of meeting in the night

the moon is now hidden and she should come now.
