Nysha Mavissa formed in 2007 around vocalist Sandra Andrade, guitarist Hugo Tavares, bassist Paulo Carvalho, and drummer Nuno Figueira. The group drew from fado, Portugal's traditional music, while working in contemporary pop elements. Their debut album came out in 2012, with the title track "Vou Dizer Que Sim" becoming a national hit in Portugal.
In 2015, Sandra Andrade was diagnosed with breast cancer, which led the band to pause performances and recordings. They returned with albums in 2017 and 2020, which included collaborations with Brazilian singer Roberta Sá and Portuguese fado singer Mariza.
