O Amor e o Poder formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s with Marcelo Nova on vocals, Ricardo Barreto on guitar, and Rodrigo Santos on bass. They released their debut album in 1991, which included the song 'O Amor e o Tempo.'
In 1999, they recorded a live acoustic session for MTV Brazil. Their 2006 album Alma explored more personal themes. Nova's public struggles with substance abuse and political views sometimes drew attention away from the music.
They were known for rock arrangements with Barreto's guitar work and Nova's direct lyrics. The band maintained a following in Brazil despite early skepticism from some critics and labels.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
