A Salvador band from the '90s that mixed axé, samba, and reggae with lyrics that didn't shy away from trouble.
For their mix of danceable rhythm and social commentary, start with 'Traíra.' For something with a bit more edge, 'Lobo Mau' holds up.
They came out of Salvador in the early '90s with a sound that felt like a street party but carried real weight. The title track 'Traíra' became a major hit about betrayal that people still play, while other songs like 'Lobo Mau' tackled social issues with a sharp humor that drew criticism. Their name translates to 'The Run Over,' which fit the pushback they got.
Their self-titled debut arrived in 1993, followed by 'Traíra' the next year. They kept at it through the decade with records like 'Axé Sudão' in 1995 and a live album from Salvador in 1996. By the late '90s they had a 'best of' collection, but the early material is what stuck.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
