O Bando D'Água formed in Portugal in 1984, playing reggae at a time when the genre and its Rastafari associations faced prejudice there. Their lyrics, mostly written by vocalist Tó Cruz, often addressed social and political issues. The song 'Folha Seca' became particularly well-known.
This censorship seemed to boost their profile rather than diminish it. Their music found listeners in other Portuguese-speaking countries like Angola, Mozambique, and Brazil.
They released albums including their self-titled debut in 1986, 'Filhos da Nação' in 1992, 'Guerreiros da Luz' in 1995, and 'Com a Força de um Vento' in 2006. The original lineup featured Tó Cruz on vocals, Chico Chapas on guitar, Miguel Veríssimo on bass, Victor Torpedo on drums, and Pedro Vaz on keyboards.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
