Background notes

Archive material and source history

O Baobá formed in Salvador, Bahia in 2003, bringing together musicians drawn to the rhythms of their region. They released their first album in 2005, followed by others including Canção de Amor in 2008 and Mãe de Amor in 2015. The band's lineup included Larrisa Luz on lead vocals, with Juliana Ribeiro, Tatiana Cruz, Renata Rosa, Érico Di Jesus, and Maíra Lins rounding out the group.

Their song "Mãe de Amor" became particularly well-known, a track that speaks to mothers with Luz's vocals carrying the melody. In 2014, the band's scheduled performance at a São Paulo music festival was canceled, which some critics viewed as censorship of their message.

O Baobá maintained connections to social concerns through their music and activities. They put out Umbigo in 2018, continuing to work from their base in Bahia.
