O Baque formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1996 around vocalist and percussionist Malu Verçosa, her brother guitarist Ricardo Verçosa, bassist Paulinho Andrade, and drummer Ricardo Conrado. Their self-titled 1998 debut album included songs like "O Baque" and "Filhos da Liberdade" that addressed race, gender, and social justice themes, drawing both attention and criticism.
Their catalog also includes "Baque Mulher," "O Baile do Quinzinho," "Afoxé," "Sambadeiras," and "O Baque de Coração." Other songs in their repertoire include "Atos," "Menina," "Nega," "Caos," "O Mundo Está Indo Menino," "O Segundo Caderno," and "Periféricos."
While their lineup has seen changes, Malu Verçosa, Ricardo Verçosa, and Paulinho Andrade have remained central to the group. They've performed with musicians like Marcelo D2, Lenine, and Carlinhos Brown in live settings and collaborations.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
