A Rio de Janeiro band that blended hip-hop with Brazilian rhythms to tell stories from the city's streets.
For a sense of their approach, 'Sua Mulher' and 'Cano Na Cabeça' frame it well, straight talk over those intricate rhythms.
They came out of Rio in the late '90s with a sound that didn't sit still. Their music pulled from samba and folk rhythms to back up lyrics that talked plainly about life in the city. A song like 'Cano Na Cabeça' carried a direct, confrontational tone that got people talking, some called it honest, others said it glorified violence.
O Círculo formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1997, led by MC Leonardo. They put out their first album, 'Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol,' in 1999 and followed it with four more records through 2007. Their run ended after that.
