O Gadder formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1988 with four childhood friends: Gustavo Gaspar on vocals, Duda Spies on guitar, Marcos 'Carlinhos' Neves on bass, and Fabio Brazza on drums. Their sound pulled from Brazilian pop, new wave, and reggae, which gave them a particular texture in the local scene.
In 1994, they released 'A Tal da Loira,' a song that became an instant radio staple with its catchy melody and irreverent lyrics. It was their breakout hit, though it also drew some criticism at the time for its content. They followed it with albums like 'Faixa Diagonal' in 1995 and 'Maré Cheia' in 1997, which included tracks such as 'Bossa Pra Você' and 'Novo Tempo.'
The band saw lineup changes over time, with Duda Spies leaving in 2001 and Fabio Brazza departing in 2009. They brought in new members like Marcelo Lobato on guitar and Felipe Salles on drums, and their music gradually incorporated more samba, rock, and funk elements. Later albums like 'Manifesto' from 2010 and 'Encontro das Águas' from 2013 showed this shift, though they kept a hand in the playful, melodic style that first got them attention.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
