O Grande Babaca was a Brazilian punk band that started making noise in the early 2000s. Their debut album from 2003, 'A Gente Bebe,' gave them a drinking song that stuck around in certain circles. The band's lyrics often took aim at politicians and social conventions, which didn't sit well with everyone.
Pedro "Babaca" Henrique sang and wrote the words, with Diego "Peixe" dos Santos on guitar, André "André" Costa on bass, and Rafael "Rafa" Fernandes on drums. They put out records like 'Foda-se o Carnaval' in 2006 and 'Babaca pra Presidente' in 2008, the latter playing with the idea of their frontman running for office. Songs like 'Carta Aberta' and 'Alymonia' kept up their straightforward, confrontational style.
Their live shows sometimes involved nudity or simulated sex acts, adding to their reputation for causing a stir. While they faced lawsuits and pushback from conservative groups, they developed a dedicated following who connected with that unapologetic stance. The band's last album was 'O Último Babaca' in 2012.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
