O Jardineiro e Bella Flor is a Brazilian alternative rock duo made up of João "Jardineiro" Guimarães and Maria "Bella Flor" Tavares. They started playing together in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s, drawing inspiration from artists like Tom Zé and Os Mutantes. Their early shows got mixed reactions, with some people liking their unusual approach and others finding it too strange.
Their first album, "Cuidar," came out in 2001 and did well with critics. The title track became known for its environmental themes. They followed it with records like "Terra Firme" in 2004 and "Coisa de Interior" in 2007, where they worked in more electronic and psychedelic sounds alongside Brazilian rhythms. Jardineiro handles the vocals and guitar, while Bella Flor writes lyrics and arranges the music.
They've worked with other musicians including Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Some of their songs, like "Feliz Ano Novo" and "O Que Toda Criança Quer?," show their mix of folk and samba elements with rock. Their music has sometimes been called obscure or pretentious, but they've kept a following for their particular style.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
