O Mamute formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1970s around Nelson Jacobina on vocals and guitar, with Roberto Barreto on guitar, Jorge Black on bass, and Gileno Santana on drums. Their first album came out in 1977, featuring the song "O Mamute Pequenino." The band's music drew from samba, rock, and folk rhythms.

They kept recording through the 1980s, putting out albums like "Cuidado com a Cabeça" in 1981 and "Código Penal" in 1983. Other songs from their catalog include "Quanto vale?" and "Morena e Nuca Mais."

Jacobina remained the central figure as the lineup changed over time. The group's sound mixed Brazilian traditions with rock elements, heard on tracks like "Cabeça-De-Área" and "Mosquito." They recorded into the late 1980s with albums such as "Feiticeira" in 1989.
