O Monteles formed in São Paulo in the 1990s around vocalist and composer André Abujamra, who had previously been part of the underground band Os Mulheres Negras. The group's classic lineup included guitarist Thiago Castanho, bassist Marcos Suzano, and drummer Paulo Miklos.
Their self-titled debut album came out in 1996 and featured the song 'Nas Ruas de São Paulo,' which became something of an urban anthem. The band's sound drew from samba, rock, and MPB, and they played major festivals and television shows during this period.
They released several more albums, including 'Mais Baile na Cidade' in 1998, 'A Bela e o Monstro' in 2000, and 'Tropicalismo Pop' in 2003. Other songs in their catalog include 'A Mesma Canção,' 'Carta Aos Cegos,' and 'Heróis.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
