Oai Star formed in 1993 when Yann Destal and Mathias Malzieu met as students in Rennes, France. They released their debut album 'Électronique Guitare' in 1996, which included the track 'Les Poètes Du Tiroir' that became something of a sleeper hit. The duo handled vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation between them, with Destal on keyboards and Malzieu on guitar and accordion.
They followed that album with several others over the next decade, including 'D'où Viens-Tu?' in 1998, 'Hypernuit' in 2000, and 'L'Horizon' in 2003. Their songs like 'Du Vin Et Du Boucan' and 'Le Beat, La Guitare Et Les Voix' blended electronic textures with folk and rock elements, creating a sound that was both melodic and textural.
Their lyrics, often introspective and poetic, drew both admiration and criticism. Some found them cryptic, while others appreciated their willingness to explore themes of love and identity. The band continued releasing music through the 2000s, with albums like 'Poly Urbaine' in 2006 and 'Grand Jeu' in 2009, maintaining their distinctive approach to French electropop.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
