Obligatorisk Tortyr formed in Sweden in 1989 with Peter Stjärnvind on vocals and bass, Ulf Cederlund on guitar, and Jonas Stålhammar on drums. They released their debut EP 'Aldrig/Inget' in 1990, followed by their first full-length album 'The Ultimate Pain' the next year.
Their music was built around relentless blast beats and guttural vocals, with lyrics that often dealt with blasphemy and nihilism. The title track from that first EP, 'Aldrig,' became something of a statement piece with its declaration that nothing matters. They put out several more albums through the 1990s, including 'Supposed to Rot' in 1993 and 'Torment' in 1995.
In 1994, the band faced charges of religious defamation after performing a song with graphic depictions of Christ. The case drew international attention and protests from various groups. They continued releasing material like 'Anti-Christ' in 1997 before eventually winding down.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
