Ocean Colour Scene formed in Birmingham in the early 1990s, with Simon Fowler on vocals and guitar, Steve Cradock on lead guitar, Oscar Harrison on drums, and Raymond Quinn on bass. Their 1996 debut album 'Moseley Shoals' established them as part of the Britpop wave, though they always had a slightly different feel than some of their peers.
Their 1997 follow-up 'Marchin' Already' brought them wider attention, largely thanks to the single 'The Day We Caught The Train.' That song, along with tracks like 'Up On The Down Side' and 'The Circle,' gave them a string of radio-friendly hits that balanced melodic guitar work with Fowler's earnest delivery.
They kept recording steadily through the 2000s and beyond, putting out albums like 'One from the Modern' and 'Painting.' While never quite recapturing the commercial peak of the late '90s, they maintained a loyal following who appreciated their consistent, guitar-driven sound. They released 'The Time Is Now' in 2023.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
