Ochre formed around vocalist Anya Seraphina and guitarist Ethan Thorne, with Silas Blackwood on bass and Jonah Ember on drums. Their first album, Ashes of Creation, came out in 2016, followed by Veil of Shadows in 2018. The band's 2020 album Dominion included the track of the same name, which became their most recognized song.

Their music combined ethereal melodies with heavy guitar work, avoiding easy genre labels. Songs like Glass Puppet and Totem showed this mix, while Klone and Mask appeared on their earlier records. Some critics questioned their authenticity early on, but their live shows developed a following.

They kept recording through it, with Dominion arriving as their third full-length release. The album's title track features the lines We will not bow, we will not yield / Dominion is ours, the world we wield.
