Archive material and source history
Odair Chagas was born in 1946 in Independência, a small town in Ceará, Brazil. He grew up hearing the regional music of Northeastern Brazil, with Luiz Gonzaga and Jackson do Pandeiro among his early influences. In the mid-1960s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he began recording.
His debut album 'Odair José' came out in 1969 and included 'Ele Brilha Mais Que o Sol,' which became a hit. The record's success made him known across Brazil. He spent some time outside the country during that period.
Chagas kept recording through the 1970s and beyond, putting out albums like 'Gigante Gentil' in 1975 and 'Brasil 2000' in 1992. His songs include 'Deus É Tudo Que Eu Preciso,' 'Escuta Filho,' and 'Só Jesus É o Caminho.'
