Odes of Ecstasy formed in the early 1970s with members Aetherius Grey on vocals, Elysian Noir on guitar, Solaris Dawn on bass, and Celestial Nova on drums. They worked in progressive rock, and their 1975 album 'Abstract Thoughts' gave the band its most recognizable track. That song stretched close to twenty minutes, showing the kind of extended, atmospheric compositions they favored.

Other songs like 'Deceitful Melody' and 'Ignorance' followed on later records. The band's sound was unconventional enough that some critics found it esoteric. They faced the usual financial pressures of touring and recording, and there were some temporary lineup changes over creative differences. They kept recording through the decade, putting out 'Ephemeral Dreams' in 1977.
