Ogiva formed in São Paulo in 1974 with guitarist Edgard Poças, bassist Odirlei Ferreira, drummer Sérgio Tomaz, and vocalist Airton Ximenez. Their sound drew from progressive rock acts like Pink Floyd and King Crimson, built around complex arrangements and lyrics that often touched on spirituality and social issues.
Their debut album 'Mundo Novo' came out in 1978, establishing their approach in Brazilian progressive rock. They followed it with records like 'Nação Liberdade' in 1981 and 'Ogiva 3' in 1983, maintaining a focus on musical intricacy throughout that period.
Early on, some record labels and radio stations weren't interested in their less commercial direction. But the band kept working with that core lineup for years, with Poças's guitar work and Ferreira's bass providing much of their instrumental foundation.
