Archive material and source history
Ogma formed in 2012 around guitarist Tony Byrne, with Cathal Minogue on vocals and bass, Simon Byrne on drums, and Ronan Ryan on keyboards. They started playing what you might call Celtic-infused progressive rock, drawing from ancient Celtic culture for their melodies and themes.
Their debut album 'An Open Sky' came out in 2015, with the title track becoming something of a signature piece for the band. They followed it with 'The Voyage' in 2017, which leaned further into Celtic mythology, and then 'Elysian' in 2019, a concept album about death and rebirth.
Some traditionalists criticized their approach as straying too far from pure Celtic roots, but they kept blending those ancient influences with modern progressive sounds anyway. They toured fairly extensively, playing energetic live shows that built them a following.
