Background notes

Archive material and source history

Ogress formed in New York City in the late 1970s with John S. Hall on vocals and programming, Steven Archer on bass and vocals, and Chris Cochrane on drums. Their music combined industrial noise with rock elements and electronic textures, often built around Hall's distant-sounding vocals, distorted guitars, and synthesizers.

In 1982 they released the song "A.I.D.S.," which drew attention for its direct lyrics about the epidemic. The track appeared on their self-titled EP that year, followed by albums like "The Shadow of Death" in 1983 and "The Cutting Edge" in 1985. Other songs in their catalog include "Betrayal," "Broken," and "The End."

Their material was rarely played on radio, and the band's abrasive sound and confrontational themes kept them largely an underground concern. They stopped releasing records after 1987's "The Last Days of Sodom."
