Oldi formed in Santos in 1985, with Fernando Penteado on vocals and guitar, Chico Neves on bass, and Martim Pereira on drums. They came together after the punk band Cólera ended. Their first album came out in 1987 but didn't find much of an audience at the time.
Things changed with their second album in 1992. The song 'Eu Me Sinto Só' connected with people in a way their earlier work hadn't, and it became something of an anthem. That record brought them more attention and a different kind of following.
Penteado was known for being outspoken, and the band's alignment with certain counterculture ideas drew criticism from more conservative listeners. The lineup shifted over time, with Neves and Pereira eventually leaving. Penteado kept the project going through those changes.
They put out several more albums in the 1990s, including 'Despertar' in 1995 and 'Constelação' later that decade. Songs like 'Me Faz Companhia' and 'Nunca Mais Vou Ser o Mesmo' continued in that vein of atmospheric, introspective music they were known for.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
