Background notes

Archive material and source history

Oliver Urdaneta was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1970. He formed the alternative rock band Malanga with guitarist Ricardo Hidalgo in 1994, and they released three albums together. Their third album, 'El Canto del Bobo' from 1999, included the track '¿Por qué no te callas?' which became widely known.

That song gained attention for its politically charged lyrics directed at a Spanish monarch during a 2007 summit. After Malanga disbanded in 2007, he continued working as a solo artist.
